ProEquo is a natural supplementary feed which contributes to a horse's balanced intestinal flora. Everyone knows how important a balanced intestinal flora is for the horse's well-being and how easily this can be upset due to external stress.

ProEquo can be described as a product that does to the horse's stomach what probiotic health drinks like Yakult, Actimel and ProViva does for the human stomach. It contains the beneficial bacteria Lactobacillus plantarum JI:1 (DSM 11520), found in very high concentration in the products. The bacterium originally comes from a healthy horse intestine and is naturally occurring in that environment. The bacterium is patented due to its unique and positive characteristics in a horse's bowel.

Use

ProEquo is used mainly for horses with stomach-related issues, were it has been determined that the horse has an imbalance in the intestinal flora (i.e. diarrhea, smelly dung, stomach stress, or with antibiotics). Even horses with laminitis, mud fever and rash/dermatitis (a.k.a. "summer eczema" in Icelandic horses), can use ProEquo today. Unfortunately, many horse owners wait to use this supplement until after a problem has arisen, whereas they could have used ProEquo® as a preventative measure.

ProEquo is recommended every day as a supplement to the horse's diet and can be given to both foals and adult horses. It can also be given to foals as protection against diarrhea.

When the risk of stomach and bowel-related problems is high, or when the problem has already occurred, we recommend an increased daily dose of ProEquo. It may be necessary during antibiotic treatments, feed/environmental changes, hard training, long journeys or frequent competitions.

Horses that have difficulty gaining weight, despite adequate nutrition, have in many cases proved to have improved nutrient intake (and therefore more fat and muscles) when being fed ProEquo.

ProEquo® Sticks

ProEquo Sticks is packaged in a convenient box of 15 servings (sticks) with 6g of active powder each. The product has a long shelf life at room temperature and is easy to handle in the stable, and convenient to bring with you during long transports. The dry product can easily be combined with other types of feed.

Swedish research & unique bacterial culture

The company ProEquo AB is located at the Ideon Science Park in Lund. ProEquo is developed by the same researchers behind Swedish health drink ProViva. The product is clinically tested in cooperation with the Evidensia Horse Specialist Hospital in Helsingborg (formerly the Helsingborg Regional Animal Hospital). Thanks to the well documented benefits, ProEquo is recommended by several veterinarians.

ProEquo contains the unique and patented bacterial culture of Lactobacillus plantarum JI: 1 (DSM 11520), which originally comes from a healthy horse's intestine and is found naturally in the environment. The bacterium is patented because its unique and positive characteristics in a horse's bowel. It is a great advantage for any probiotic bacteria to originate from the same species as they are used to.

Both ProEquo products have very high bacterial counts in comparison to other products. ProEquo Sticks have a very high bacterial content (ca. 80 billion probiotic bacteria per pack), so you are using a product with a completely new technique, as the given bacterial culture maintains a very good shelf life when stored at room temperature. ProEquo products contain only natural ingredients and there is no qualifying period when using ProEquo.

Probiotics and Functional Feed

An intestinal flora in balance is crucial for the horse's well-being. In an adult horse, they colonize in the gastrointestinal tract as several hundred different species of microorganisms (mo), where the strict anaerobic (M.O.) predominates. The horse is completely dependent on certain M.O. in the intestinal flora to break down and use the energy in its cellulose-rich diet. The balance in the horse's gut flora can be easily disrupted due to external shocks.

The idea that gut microflora consists of harmless and "beneficial" bacteria as well as those that could be potentially harmful and cause disease was first born by the Russian scientist and Nobel laureate Elie Metchnikoff (1845-1916). He believed that the lactic acid bacteria present were particularly interesting and that they could counteract disturbances in the gastrointestinal tract. The often-used term "probiotic" means "microorganisms with beneficial health effects in humans or animals".

Mostly studied for their probiotic effects are the different lactobacillus strains (a type of lactic acid bacteria). Functional Feed is a feed or feed supplement enriched with one or more ingredients that provide documented health benefits in addition to the product's normal nutritional value. An example of a functional feed are probiotics.
